Zephaniah in Blogs

Here are some posts on Benjamin Zephaniah which I find worth reading:
  • A review of one of Zephaniah’s novels in a site which aims at encouraging people to read.
  • A British teacher of creative writing living in Malaysia who used to work in the school Benjamin went to. She gives an interesting account of her experience as white middleclass teacher working with Jamaican descent students. You can also read what she thinks about his show in Kuala Lumpur. (You should also follow her links.)
  • A student from Malaysia writing about BZ performance in her school.
  • An enthusiastic account of BZ performance in Calcutta.

Thanks for the link - I discovered BZ quite a few years ago and feel that his best works are still Face and Refugee Boy.

Gangsta Rap didn't do much for me, I'm afraid.

I have only read some scattered poems, but what I mostly like is his approach to poetry. As you said in one of your posts, it’s amazing to gather 200 to listen to poetry.
He was here in Buenos Aires some years ago, I couldn’t see him. Hope he comes again.
I’ll try to read "Face" or "Refugee Boy", sometimes it’s not so easy to get books published abroad.

I just read you infor about being a teacher etc - so am I and I try to use technology in the class. At the minute we are reading a book by Louis Sachar - Holes and the class is working on a wiki to produce some work. They have really taken to it and are doing a fantastic job. I have not done any of the content, I just help them organise.

Have a look here

I’ve just visited your wiki, they really ARE doing a fantastic job. I’d like to know how old your students are.
I’ll be working on a wiki project (related to writing) with one group of students. The thing is that my students and I can only use the internet at home, (I live in an undeveloped country, you know) so this makes things more difficult. I’m trying, though. I think it’s worth trying; these new tools give students the opportunity of working more independently, your wiki is a clear proof.
Congratulations for your wiki project and your blog.
